Trainee, who is new to the house in Millennial mentoring, belongs to the Posti's management team. Vice President of Strategy and Communication Maiju Fernelius and Communications Trainee Katariina Honkanen eagerly joined the program.
- This is a great opportunity for me to get to know a person who comes from outside the industry and looks at Posti and working life with fresh eyes. The most important thing here has been my own open mind and desire to get to know another person, Maiju says.
- We have had really fruitful discussions. The goal is for both of us to get the most out of this, Katariina says.
The mentoring program did not have strict guidelines that the mentoring pairs should follow, so everyone was allowed to form their own way of doing things.
- We have decided on the issues shortly before the next meeting. Among other things, we have talked about the challenges of remote working: how to take a break from the working day and make a distinction between work and leisure, Katariina describes.
- In the beginning, when we considered a bit of expectations and themes, many things came up from both sides. There was confidence that even without a precise plan, there were themes to delve into. We have worked very flexibly, says Maiju.
Pure Positivity
Maiju's goal when starting mentoring was to learn about the needs and expectations of millennials related to working life, among other things.
- It is important for me to understand that side as well. I want to broaden my own perspectives to understand the thoughts and expectations of those who come into working life.
Katariina, who graduated in June, hoped that they could discuss with Maiju both matters related to Posti and working life in general.
- When you come to a new organization, mentoring gives you a deeper insight into people and the organization. You can ask broader, workplace-independent questions where there are practical issues related to Posti.
The mentoring program gathers mere positive feedback and praise from both. Maiju and Katariina have found a great pair of mentors.
- It has been really nice to know that there is a couple of mentors who dare to go and talk about their own problems. The most important thing is not to be left alone and dare to ask more experienced people how I can move forward, Katariina says.
- I really admire Katariina’s way of diving into topics curiously. The ability to go looking for information and grasp any subject has been great attitude and way of working. We could all learn from that, Maiju praises.
In the Millennial Mentoring Program, participants of the Posti Trainee Program mentor the members of the Posti Management Team. Reverse mentoring has many benefits: members of the management team get to hear what values and insights millennials have, and they can get a lot of fresh ideas for doing their own work. Millennials can also provide guidance on issues such as technology, social media, and general trends. Mentoring mentors, on the other hand, can become more closely involved in their new work community by collaborating with the management team. At the same time, it will give good tips for building your own career.
The mentor pairs are: Razieh Zare – Kaj Kulp, Anna Juusonen – Kaarina Ståhlberg, Vesa Pulkkinen – Janne Ojanperä, Henri Torniainen – Tom Jansson, Emilia Rantala – Hanna Reijonen, Aleksanteri Fagerholm – Petteri Naulapää, Markus Hirvola – Sakari Kiiskinen, Anniina Puhilas – Yrjö Eskola, Katariina Honkanen – Maiju Fernelius ja Henri Törnwall – Turkka Kuusisto.
