A Summer Job at the Jyväskylä Terminal Inspired Anne to Investigate Transportation Damage and Incident Reports

Transportation Manager

Anne Paananen works as a Transportation Manager in the terminal located in Jyväskylä and is also studying logistics engineering at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences. She originally became interested in Posti on the recommendation of a classmate who told her about the collaboration of Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences and Posti. It was possible to apply for Posti’s summer work at the university facilities that eased Anne’s decision to apply for Posti.

Anne started her summer work with Posti in May 2018, and from early autumn onwards worked already in various fill-in positions. By the end of the year, she was working full-time at Posti. “I have been working as a Transportation Manager for regional transportation for the entire time, working to ensure that goods are transported from the terminal to the surrounding areas. My main job has been organising cargo driving in Jyväskylä and elsewhere in central Finland. In addition, I have also been able to explore driving logistics for the brewing sector which has brought nice variation to work”, she says.

Anne found a topic for her thesis at work. Her thesis deals the transport damage and incident reporting that is also a very topical theme for Posti. Her thesis work proceed smoothly and, thanks to her instructor and Production Manager Valtteri Hirvikangas, she received help whenever needed. Together, they also gathered Posti data as the background to the thesis and regularly discussed about the progress of thesis work.

“The employer’s genuine interest in thesis motivated me to work on it diligently, and it was a meaningful project right from the beginning. The studies provide a good basis for working life, but real learning happens only by doingSo learning continues all the time, which is nice”, Paananen says.

There was also flexibility in work when her studies required it. “I studied in the university and worked with Posti at the same time, but it was possible to fit these different activities together flexibly. This eased my studies, and my thesis was completed according to the planned schedule” .

Paananen’s hope is to continue working with Posti. Working on her thesis was a good way to learn about Posti more broadly as an organisation and to influence on Posti’s reporting practices development.

In the spring of 2018, Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences and Posti signed a three-year cooperation agreement for long-term partnership. The partnership covers cooperation areas such as student recruitment, thesis works and projects, and training. www.jamk.fi.
